Things to Avoid in Delivering a Good Wedding Speech

A wedding speech is a make or break situation that could either make a lasting memory for the bride and groom or simply ruin the occasion. Creating a good wedding speech is not a simple task. Always remember, you are addressing a message to the newlyweds in front of hundreds of their wedding guests. This is not a simple “Hey congratulations” type of message where you can just poke them and snigger. Instead, it’s a serious matter because the occasion is a gathering of the most important people to witness and support the couple who are celebrating their love through the sacrament of matrimony.

In order to create and deliver a good wedding speech, there are some things you should avoid saying or doing. By avoiding these factors, you are saving yourself from embarrassment and misery. Here are some of the things you should avoid:

1. Profanity
You should prepare a wedding speech that is free from profanity. Remember, the wedding is a family event. There are many children present on the occasion so better avoid cursing or saying any profane words that could ruin the event. If you have been fond of cursing while you’re talking to the couple in ordinary days because that’s how you are, avoid doing this on their wedding day. Show them that you can be decent if you want to. It’s not only them that can hear your speech, everyone in the wedding will be there to witness your moment, your time to deliver the speech you have prepared.

2. Unnecessary stories
A good wedding speech can contain lighthearted jokes and other funny details but you shouldn’t go overboard by telling inappropriate stories or experiences you had with the groom or bride. You simply cannot tell everyone about the time how you and the couple spent a night drinking until all of you passed out or what happened in the bachelor party or the naughty pranks you pulled on the professor back in college, or anything that is simply unnecessary for everyone to hear.

3. All about Ex’s
Telling a story about the Ex’s is a big no no for the wedding day. Do not mention anything about ex-girlfriends or ex-boyfriends and even ex-wives or ex-husbands. Always remember that the wedding day of two of your closest friends are all about them, their memories, nothing about their previous failed relationships. Even if the couple met through their ex’s, you should not go on and detail how it all started. Remember, a good wedding speech is all about your personal message for the newlyweds, not a bunch of stories you know about them.

4. Inappropriate jokes
The wedding day is the moment where the bride and groom are the most important people in the event. Of course, in order to deliver a good wedding speech, you should include a joke or two in order to loosen up the guests a bit. You can poke and lightheartedly tell a joke about the bride and groom but never ever say any inappropriate jokes that could embarrass them. You should remember that their wedding day is their moment to shine with the spotlight on. Don’t become a stand up comic who just wanted to play pranks on the couple because the guests are laughing. Your wedding speech should be personal and sentiment about how important these two people are in your life.

5. Speaking with your mouth full
When it’s about your turn to deliver your wedding speech, you should avoid chewing gum or eating. Remember what your mother told you when you were younger “stop talking with your mouth full.” Same thing applies to giving out your wedding speech. You should speak clearly so that everyone can understand your message, especially the couple whom you are addressing your speech to.

6. Drunk
One of the worst things that could ruin your entire speech is when you’re drunk. Nothing beats slurring your words because you simply can’t control your tongue because of drunkenness. You can get drunk after your speech but not prior to that. Another thing that you cannot control when you’re drunk is the words you utter. You might never know it but you are already cursing or telling inappropriate stories and jokes about the couple so better avoid that alcohol before you are through with your speech responsibility.
