Know Your Wedding Speech Etiquette from the Heart
Wedding is supposed to be the day of the bride and groom. They have the spotlight on their own and people around them are so delighted that they’re finally married. However, there are some instances when those people who have given out speeches at weddings have deliberately made a mark on the special event, an unforgettable and embarrassing mark that is.
If you are one of the assigned people to give out speeches, you should be well aware of the different wedding speech etiquette to avoid ruining the special event of your friend or relative. Everyone present is there to celebrate the union of love of two people in the sacrament of matrimony, not to witness you make a fool of yourself during speech presentation.
The first wedding speech etiquette you have to remember is to avoid drinking too much wine on the reception. If you are too drunk to even stand up and speak out, you are not fit to deliver the wedding speech you prepared. Just resist the urge to drink earlier on prior to the speech delivery portion of the wedding event.
Now, if it’s your turn to present your speech, stand up, raise your glass, and lightly tap on it to capture people’s attention. As wedding speech etiquette, it is far better to say your speech while you’re standing in front of the couple and the guests because by this small action, you are honoring the newlyweds. This will also provide an easier vocal projection as compared to presenting your speech while sitting down.
Another wedding speech etiquette is to speak out the words clearly and moderately paced. There’s no need to hurry when you’re presenting your speech because you wanted the couple to understand your personal message clearly. Even if you’re nervous, just take a deep breath, and remember to pause when the audience starts to applaud in some parts of your speech. This means that they are really listening to your message and that they appreciate it.
When you decide to crack up a joke, you should keep it clean as there are some children present in the event. Keep your jokes PG rated because the wedding is a family event after all. When you are about to tell a story about how you and groom fooled around in the campus in the college days, don’t go on detailing every part of the story to avoid embarrassing the groom too much. A slight poke and joke won’t hurt but a severe poking with nasty details about how boisterous the groom is when he was younger will really affect him, especially his reputation.
You should also bear in mind to avoid cursing or using profane language when you’re presenting your speech. Just like what has been mentioned earlier, there are some children who hear every word you say. You don’t want them to learn profane language especially from someone like you. As the overall wedding speech etiquette, keep everything clean.
As long as you keep your speech entertaining, light, and clean, you are on your way to become one of the best speakers in the wedding. Lastly, invite all guests to raise their glasses and join you to wish the best of luck for the newlyweds. Now if you’re the bride or the groom, raise your glass and sip wine after everyone made the toast and sipped from their glass of wine. It’s the wedding etiquette you should live by as well.
When you have finished presenting your wedding speech and have closely followed the different etiquette we have listed here, you should be fine. If given a chance to get close to the couple, hug them tightly and smile to confirm that you are indeed happy for their union.
